The highest points of Rock Mountain and Five Mile Hill looked directly across a deep valley at each other.  The valley was well watered by War Eagle Creek that began with several mountain springs and rampaged down the mountain, picking up other small rivulets on the way.  The rocky mountainside created a bridal veil of sparkles and white foam, and the river rushed on.
It came to rest in Sycamore Lake, perched on the mountainside, then spilled over, landing in the valley.  After turning the mill wheel at Applegate’s, it rushed on to join the much larger Tuscalusa River on the way to the Mississippi.
For several miles along the Tuscalara, homes sprang up.  A church appeared and school house became a necessity.  Pretty young teachers didn’t last (they got married!), so the town finally hired young Mr. Rob Wilson… who had his own troubles. But there was Duke, the bloodhound, to help him.
These books are about the people.   From the widow of the moonshiner who was picked off with a revenuer’s bullet, to general store and the pharmacy, the residents of River Bend range through every description.  Disagreements were seldom fatal because they needed each other, and besides, your neighbor might have something you want to trade for.  Or borrow.
Tucked within these books are births and funerals, a lot of seeking to find the best mate, and just trying to get from one day to the next.  Other nuggets are:  A toddler going over the bluff to the river, a girl faced with a friend in childbirth, a small boy hanging by his knees over the Tuscalara River.  A young man facing off with the Mississippi Railway to save his girlfriend’s inheritance, and an unexpected meeting of  the Hatfields and McCoys.
These books take the reader back to a time before microwaves, space ships and the internet, and would you believe, cell phones (though they were not much quicker than the gossip grapevine).  It was a time back when the way to get something done was to do it themselves.
The first book, Twixt the Road and the River, brings Amy Catherine through the trying period of finding a mate, but she has Gran to help her.  Gran knows about a lot of different kinds of men, and she enlists the help of Solomon and a pieced quilt to guide her granddaughter.
